Flight Nurse

A flight nurse is responsible for taking care of patients that are critically ill or in emergency situations where they need to be transported to a better facility . The mode of transportation is usually by helicopter but patients that are not in extreme emergencies may also be transferred via airplane. Flight nurses are important to make sure that the patient receives the best care possible while in transport. But how does one get a flight nurse degree?

There are several flight nurse education requirements. First, you need to become a registered nurse by completing an associate program, a diploma program at a hospital or a 4-year Bachelor of Nursing degree. Any of these degrees will allow you to obtain a license to become a registered nurse although most hospital would of course prefer a nurse with a Bachelor’s degree. After four years to obtain your nursing degree, you will still need to get a job where you handle emergencies often. Examples of these would include working at an emergency room or an intensive care unit, probably for a few years so that you will gain enough experience and know how to handle such situations with ease. It is only after you have completed these would you be allowed to work as a flight nurse.

What courses count towards flight nurse education requirements?

As stated earlier, you will first need to become a registered nurse before you can become a flight nurse. Undergoing an associate program or diploma programs are much easier since you will be taking fewer subjects as compared to obtaining a Bachelor’s degree. This may be the case but some classes that would be required are anatomy, physiology, sociology, psychology, health and wellness, microbiology, immunology, community nursing, nursing ethics, science and technology of nursing and some other additional subjects. These are the main classes that you will need for your flight nurse required education. Once you have obtained your license as a registered nurse, you need not take any more additional classes but you will have to work and gain experience first at handling emergency situations as flight nurse requirements as well.

Other flight nurse certification and certificates that you will probably need are your EMT certification, disaster management certification and various other life support certifications. These are all needed if you will be handling emergency cases as you need to know exactly what to do in such situations to keep the patient alive until better care can be given at the target destination.

What levels of degrees are available for flight nurse?

Flight nurse degrees can either be a Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree. In addition to these, flight nurse qualifications also include basic life support certification, advanced life support certification and pediatric advanced life support certification.

What are the financial requirements to become a flight nurse?

To become a flight nurse, you will of course have to spend on your undergraduate course in order to be eligible for a nursing license. Units may cost around $75-$500 depending on the institution that you plan on attending. Aside from this, you will also need to take into account the various medical supplies, lab fees, uniforms and books that you need. Books and laboratory fees are quite expensive and will cost over $1000 while uniforms and other supplies will cost a few hundred dollars. Certifications for basic and advanced life support are cheaper and would not cost more than $100.

What the continuing education requirements for flight nurse?

Flight nurse continuing education is also important to keep the nurses up to date with the most recent developments regarding patient care. Clinical tests and research are always being done so that old practices which will not provide patients with the optimal care are improved upon. Nurses would need to know these in order to provide the best type of care possible and keep patients alive longer. Nurses will need to continue taking basic and advanced life support every time in order to know the latest protocols regarding these methods. In addition to these, other continuing education courses that flight nurses can take that will be very helpful are Trauma Nurse Core Course, Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Basic Trauma Life Support and many more. all of these are helpful in some way as flight nurses will be handling different types of emergencies all the time ranging from car accidents, hurricanes and other extreme weather conditions.

What are the skills necessary to become a flight nurse?

Flight nurses need a lot of skills and attributes in order to become very good at their job. For one, they need to be very caring and understanding to patients as they will need to know what is going on in the head of the patients when providing care for them. Also, flight nurses should be able to work well under pressure because people’s lives are at stake during the job and the correct decision must be made in order to preserve as much lives as possible. Lastly, they should also be able to deal with their emotions well as it is inevitable that some patients will be lost in these types of situations.
