In 1704, the proposal of establishing a college in the Province of New York was initiated by Col. Lewis Morris. He composed a letter to the missionary arm of the Church of England, which is the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. The letter was urging the society to establish a college in New York City as it was the perfect community. On the other hand, this proposal was not granted since Princeton University was founded in New Jersey. In 1746, the general assembly of New York approved the act of raising funds for establishing a new college. The assembly appointed a commission that is comprised of ten New York residents in 1751. Seven out of the ten residents were members of the Church of England. The commission was formed to manage the funds accumulated by the state lottery towards the foundation of a college.
In July 1754, the school started classes and it was headed by Dr. Samuel Johnson. He was the first instructor of the college’s first class with eight students in it. Dr. Johnson became the college’s first president. On October 31, 1754, the college was formally initiated as King’s College by the royal approval of King George II. In the succeeding years, the college underwent changes in the administration until 1776 when the American Revolution War broke out. Classes were suspended for eight years in King’s College until the coming of the Continental Army. However, classes were still suspended since the British troops occupied New York City until their exit in 1783.
The college turned to the State of New York after the revolution to bring back its vigor, capable to make whatever variations to the schools charter the state might demand. The government agreed to assist the college, and on May 1, 1784, it passed an act which changed the college name to Columbia College to show the support for the New Republic. The Regents eventually found out the college’s defective constitution in February 1787; thus, appointing new committee. Two months later, the college adopted the new commission and presently they have been using it, to grant power to a private Board of 24 Trustees. On May 21 of the same year, William Samuel Johnson, son of Dr. Samuel Johnson has been elected (unanimously) as the President of the college. Before he served Columbia College, he participated in the First Continental Congress and one of the chosen representatives to the Constitutional Convention. Early 1790s, New York City became a federal and state capital under consecutive Federalist governments and a recovered Columbia prospered through the support of Federalists. On the commencement of the College in May 6, 1789, President George Washington and Vice President John Adams attended to demonstrate tribute of honor to the numerous alumni of the school that took part in the American Revolution.
In the 19th century, more of the College’s transformation happened, from the enrollment, structure, to academics. It was in this time that the College’s Investments in New York real estate became its main source of stable earnings for the school due to the rapid growth of the population.
The college was renamed Columbia University in 1896 by the trustees, which is formally known as Columbia University in the City of New York. In the same year, the university president transferred the campus to its current location. Columbia University rapidly developed as the nation’s major institution for research, establishing the “multiversity” that would be used by later universities.
Several changes happened in the university in the succeeding years as the World War II erupted. Manhattan project were started by the college’s faculty members. it was in 1960 that large student activism occurred in Columbia. Hundreds of students took different buildings in the campus; thus, it resulted to the resignation of the university’s President Grayson Kirk and the formation of the University Senate. In 1983, Columbia University first enrolled women during the fall.
Columbia University today has 24, 230 enrollees with an overall graduation rate of 93%. The university functions as a private, not for-profit institution.
