This is obtained through providing a student-centered education practice that is collaborative and industry-driven. Collins College was founded as Al Collins Graphic Design School by Al and Florence Collins in 1978. The school was established in Phoenix to few students and they were having classes in the evening. It was in early 80s that the school offered day classes and acquired larger facilities. The school was recognized by the National Association of Trade and Technical Schools (NATTS) in 1982. Three years later, the school transferred to a larger campus because of the continuous growth in its student population; and the following year, the university added Computer Graphics program. The Arizona State Board for Private Post-secondary Education and NATTS has approved the school’s proposal to offer an Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Graphics Design in 1987. And early 90s, the university offered Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design.
The school was obtained by Career Education Corporation (CEC) in February 1994. In 1997, numerous programs (revised and additional) were licensed by Arizona and were granted by the ACCSCT. The AA degree in Graphics Design was reviewed and expanded to contain optional specialty tracks and the BA Graphic Design was accepted a general education component. As the school population continued to increase, the college also added more programs and additional properties were also purchased. The school renamed to Collins College in 2001. There were programs that were removed and added as well in the succeeding years.
Today, Collins College operates as a private and for-profit institution of higher education that specializes in the fields of visual arts and design. The college has two campuses and it has sister schools through the United States. It has its main campus in southeast Phoenix and a branch campus in west Phoenix. The current student enrollment is 1,171 and the college has achieved 47% overall graduation rate.

The Collins College has earned its credential from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). The college has been evaluated and results show that it has a zero negative findings rating from the said commission.
