His accident paved the way in building the university as it was initiated and funded by the Clarkson’s sisters; they decided to establish an educational institution that would embody his philosophy. The university was originally called Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial School of Technology and formally opened the classes on September 2 with 17 students enrolled. In 1933, the school’s name was renamed as Thomas S. Clarkson Memorial College of Technology, which was adopted in a reduced version as Clarkson College of Technology or CCT. On February 24, 1984, the New York State Board of Regent labeled Clarkson as a University as it had shown continuous growth and development.
Today, Clarkson University provides services to 3,187 enrolled students and has earned 70% overall graduation rate. The university functions as a private university situated in Potsdam, New York.
